Comments: | Canberra's first Mobile Library service began in 1959. Scheduled stops included many inner suburbs as well as outlying settlements such as Mt Stromlo and Cotter Pumping station. In 1959 service points for children were operating at Yarralumla and Turner.
The first van was replaced in 1967 with one pulled by a prime mover. This was replaced in 1984 with a Mercedes Benz which also began visiting nursing homes and retirement villages. In 2004 and 2005, two new mobile library vans were launched, expanding services to Lanyon Shopping Centre and Weston Creek. |
